Auto body repair & detailing: Patching rocker panels, rust area, maine weather

Question
I got this car in 1999 and it has really run great. Starts quick even in the coldest Maine weather.

With the winter weather comes the dunping of calcium chloride on the roads, that is an enemy of cars.

The rocker panel on each side have rusted through the outside part only. Body shops say to replace the panels would cost about $700 for each side. They can do a patch job $300 per side. One of the technicians told me to get some fiberglass fiber, mix it up, push it into the holes and once it harderns it can be sanded down and painted.

I asked about using fiberglass cloth and he said stay away from that because it's very messy stuff to handlle.

I was planning to wrap a piece of sheet metal from the bottom of the panel, up over the rust area, and pop rivet it on.

Is fiberglass cloth difficult to use? When using fiberglass is it necessary to sand down to bare metal?

Answer
It's fairly simple, read the directions on the can of resin. Grinding and sanding the fiberglass will be fun though. You will be itchy when done. Whatever way you choose, nothing will last if you do not treat the inside of the panel when you are done.
