Auto body repair & detailing: Clear coat, dollar cars, 2006 honda civic

Question
i am about to get my 2006 honda civic'c hood repainted due to chips caused by idiots on the highway with no mudflaps but anyway i was curious if i could prevent this chipping from happening again by getting as many layers of clear coat painted on it as is legally allowable... would that make any difference?

Answer
Hi Jared,

Too much clear-coat can actually cause a problem as well. High film builds can peel off in large sheets in time. My advice is buy a chip resistant clear-coat. PPG makes a product called DC4125 Ceramiclear. Ceramiclear is a very hard clear-coat made to refinish high dollar cars such as Mercedes and BMW's. There are also other scratch and chip resistant clear-coats on the market. Try your local body shop or body shop supply house for information on what they offer.
