Auto body repair & detailing: bumper repair -fast mobile vs. body shop, volvo models, lifetime warranty

Question
QUESTION: The rear bumper corner of my 2004 camry was damaged in a parking lot.  It is about the size of a softball, the paint isn't broken thru but looks a little crackled close up. I have had door dings successfuly fixed by mobile shops, but never a bumper.  But mobiles say they do bumpers - and some specialize in bumpers including paint.  How does the quality of a fast mobile compare to a body shop for bumper repair?  thx,  steve

ANSWER: Great question Steve.

I will assume you mean a mobile unit that does not take any work back to their real bodyshop.

First off, most fast mobile operations do not have the ability to let primers and sealers dry long enough to ensure proper adhesion. Most compliant products need up to 24 hours to dry.

Secondly, in most cases the clear coat needs to heat (forced dried) to a certain tempature to activate the hardners.

When material applications are applied against the manufacturers recommendations; there is a good chance product will not last very long. Early fading, peeling and cracking may occur.

The little cracks you mention are most often deeper than the paint cracks themselves. If so, bumper may need reconditioned or replaced. Maybe not.

All in all Steve, the safest bet...go to a body shop, get a written lifetime warranty and enjoy. A bodyshop that has been recommended to you by a previously satisfied customer.

Good Luck,

QUESTION: Thx, but am I missing something here? If potential crack issues, isn't it pretty much a no-brainer to replace it(i.e. bumper cover - low cost, expect most of repair cost is paint/labor) - than muck with such a dent at all?

Answer
Steve, again, without seeing the damage I can add this. Average bumper repair range is between 300-700 dollars. Average replace cost is between 600-1200 depending on year, make and model. Bumper covers do not come pre-painted except on some Volvo models years ago. Replace cost will need to include paint labor, body labor, materials, bumper cost plus tax and misc other costs. Replace is not always cheaper. Sorry Steve; seeing the bumper would help better answer your concerns. Thanks for asking the question. I hope my answer helps you get closer to a decision. David
