Auto body repair & detailing: replace skin on drivers door 96 honda accord, auto body supply, body hammer

Question
where can i find a step by step guide to remove and replace the driver's door,
skin only, on a 96 honda accord?  I have the skin on order.

Answer
This is a job for an experienced body man, but if you think you want to try it, I'll give the main steps. Strip the door down of all hardware. Lay the door outside up on a bench. Use a body grinder to grind through the outside edge. Chisel the panel loose, not completely off. You will find welds at the top of the door that will need to be cut. You may have to heat spots in the middle of the door where there is adhesive bonding the middle of the door. Peel the skin the rest of the way off, clean the shell with a sander/grinder. The old skin was glued on and that is what is recommended but you probably don't want to spend $30.00 on glue or the $125.00 for the glue gun. (there is a reason why we charge what we do). At least go out and get a good body hammer and flat dolly, you will need these to fold the lip over to the shell. Gradually tap the lip over up and down the door, do not fold one spot all at once, do it gradually with light taps from the hammer backed on the back side with the flat dolly. If you are real careful, you will have only minimal damage on the outside of the skin. Before you weld it, put the door back on the car and fit it, make sure it is not twisted. take it back off, weld the top spots and several spots around the edges, unless you bought door skin adhesive. Finish off the outside, prime and caulk the inside and paint. hang the door and adjust, prime and paint the outside. Put it together.
I've doing this work since 1970 and I still do not like doing door skins. It's only been the last 20 or so years that I could do one without beating the edge all to shit. I'm just now able to fold the edge and paint the panel with no extra body work. If you have a nice car, get a pro to install the panel for you.
You should be able to find a bodywork basic book at your auto body supply store or try eastwood.com, they will have all the tools you will need. Good luck
