Auto body repair & detailing: 67 Mustang Vinyl top, bare metal, show car

Question
I have a 67 mustang coup that's going through a ground up restoration, It originally had a Vinyl top but that was removed when I got the car. The car was striped to bare metal and is being primered and ready for paint, the roof is fine with no rust. My painter told me not to put another vinyl top on as that would damage the roof over the long haul, or if I insist on putting one on then not to paint the roof as that is wasted work and rather install the vinyl top on the primed unpainted roof.
I was going to install a premaid vinyl top that is already purchased using 3m 08090 Vinyl top adhesive. The car will only be driven occasionally and garaged.
what is your advice?
many thanks

Answer
Get rid of your painter, he is an idiot. You need paint over the primer to seal it from moisture. If you leave it in primer and put the top over it, any moisture will be absorbed by the primer and it will rust. You don't have to put a show car job on the roof, just make it smooth and straight.
I hope your painter is not cutting other corners, were you shopping for price when you found him. You get what you pay for.
