Auto body repair & detailing: driver side interior door handle, rivot, memory lapse

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1999 yukon gmc.my handle is bronken on the inside driver side.and i read something about drilling the rivot out and then pushing something foward?im unclear about this.could u walk me thru it?step by step?thank you very much.   SHELLY GIPSON

ANSWER:  Pull the trim panel. There should be one or two bolts or rivets, I' pretty sure that one has bolts(10mm head) but don't quote me on that. Slide the handle forward a quarter inch and it should release. The lock and latch rods have a plastic snap over clip, easy from there

QUESTION: One more thing - to the right of the rivot is a plastic black "star" (3 sided prong) looking thing that turns.  Do I need to be concerned about it - does it serve a purpose in my removing the bezel (or handle)? - or if it breaks will the new part have an identical one so not to be concerned?

Answer
I have a similar model in my shop right now, let me get back to you tomorrow AM.

The plastic thing you see should be a retainer. I should come out fairly easy.
The vehicle in my shop has the newer style handle and trim. Your vehicle has the older style. I apologize for the memory lapse this morning. I have worked on several of those same type models over the years and can not remember exactly what it takes to remove it. I do remember that style was a pain to work on. GM started using that style in 1988 so the part should be very easy to find.
I will do some more research and get back to you.
