Auto body repair & detailing: painting issues, rust area, elbow grease

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I just painted a small region of my car. I'm a novice of course. I taped up
the surrounding regions and then used spray paint primer, base paint and
clear coat. Well, after I took off the tape covering the surrounding area, I see
this line between the old and the new paint. It seems the new painted area is
a little raised as well. Anyway to fix this? Can I paint between the old and the
new region to make it look uniform? Do I need to do this again by stripping
everything? Thanks!

ANSWER:  Did you put tape on the on the paint itself? That's a no no. Block sand with 400 grit wet or dry and re shoot. Only tape off the chrome and glass. Any over spray or dry edge can be rubbed out with rubbing compound and elbow grease. You will find it almost impossible to make it perfect with a spay bomb.

QUESTION: It was a small rust area near the rear wheel area. I sanded that area down and taped the area surrounding it. Then I taped the area that I hadnt sanded down. Can you kindly advise how I should have done this? So now I should block sand and reprime? Do I need to strip away the clear coat and paint first? Thanks!

Answer
No need to reprime, just block sand the area you masked to remove the tape lines. Use a strong rubbing compound about a foot or so past the sanded area to promote adhesion. Dust the area with  paint and clear just past the painted area. When dry, use rubbing compound to smooth the rough edges. I use a blender to smooth the edges but that takes a spray gun. You can buy aerosol bottles at your local autobody supply store that you can spray whatever you want through. You might check with one of them to see what's available in your area
