Auto body repair & detailing: Auto Body Training, auto body repair, chevy dealer

Question
Hi,
I would like to know the best route to a career in auto body repair. (For a nephew).  Is it best to go to a trade school? Is it possible to get on the job training? If you must go to school, can you recommend a legitimate school in
the south TN GA AL TX MO?  I am skeptical about some because it appears to cost so much-- 25K for a year.
Is it necessary or beneficial to know auto mechanics?
What is entry level pay for an auto body repair technician?
I know these are really a lot of questions, but I really want to know honestly from someone who works in the industry.
Thanks, so much for your help.

Answer
Hi San,

I love this question.

I can only answer it by telling you what I have experienced by choosing the path that I chose to take.

I don't think there is any problem with any of the schools that I've heard of, but I don't recommend that route.

I'll try to make a long story short.

Right out of high school I got a job in the body shop of a Chevy dealer washing cars. I worked my butt off, and within nine months they made me an apprentice. I sent the next two and a half years learning how to fix and paint the cars. I tend to learn quickly, so I'm not sure if this time frame is normal or not. From there I went to an independent repair facility and worked "on my own". My boss at the time could see that I had a decent personality, and taught me how to write estimates so that I could fill in when he wanted the day off. I've done this for over 13 years now. My next step is to buy the business.

I believe this is the best way to enter into the business. For one thing, you get PAID to learn! Also, a tech in this industry will NEVER make more money if he's been to school for it, he'll make just the same as the next guy. In fact, it would probably be HARDER for him to find a job if his only experience is in a classroom.

Entering into the business as I did, he probably shouldn't expect to make MUCH more than minimum wage. It sucks, I know, but it's better than paying for the education. After time his earnings will only match his abilities and work ethic. The average wage in my area, Lansing, MI, would be somewhere around $40k to $50k. I know some guys that aren't driven by money that make $30k, and I've got a few good friends that make in excess of $125k...they really hustle though.

Well, I hope this sheds some light on your situation. If you need or want more info, feel free to ask.

Good luck with all and have a good day!

Aaron
