Auto body repair & detailing: Dent repair, dent repair kits, mail tim

Question
I had a wonderful day. I go out to my car and find a 8" dent on the left front fender of my 99 ford taurus. Just the right height for a shopping cart. I am quite mechanically inclined but have never attempted a dent repair before. What is best way for me to repair this? do I sand it down, body fill it and then paint? how about those suction cup pull a dent repair kits from canadian tire?
Thanks for thge advice

Answer
Tim, I understand that you are upset about your fender, but I feel as though you are taking out your frustration on me. Apathy? If I didn't care, I wouldn't have taken 10 minutes out of my day to try to help you out. I gave you a low cost alternative to explore before tearing into your fender. Those dent repair kits just sort of basically pop the major part of the dent out, the dent is still there when you are done- it's just less horrible than it was before. If the dent is beyond the scope of a dent wizard, do you really want to learn how to do bodywork on the family car? By your own admission, you have no experience with body repair- that leads me to believe you don't have the necessary tools to do the job. The best body repairs are the ones you never know were performed- if you tackle the repair on your fender yourself, I promise you, you will see the repair. If that is okay with you, or I am way off base with my judgement that you don't have body work tools, then by all means, have at it. Pull out the healamp, pry the dent out with a prybar, Grind the  dented area with 36 grit, fill with bondo, form filler with 80 grit, feather and final sand with 220, primer and paint. It sounds simple, but to make it look good just plain takes experience, I can"t teach you how to do bodywork and paint in an e-mail, Tim. I've trained and honed my skills over 23 years, and I just can't teach you without actually being there. good luck to you, and I really hope that you can get it fixed by a dent wizard. It costs about 1/3 the price of having the panel repaired. Bill
