Auto body repair & detailing: Bubble forming on van door, paint., rust o leum, tin snips

Question
1999 Dodge Caravan, bubble getting bigger on sliding passenger door near bottom. On inside of door it is rusting, so I sanded best I could without taking door off, apllied rust-bullet, used bondo, primed, painted.  Bubble seems to be getting bigger, should I break bubble and work from there, and when I do this, how do I do it?  Do I just take a screwdriver and break the bubble and use tin snips or whatever until the bad part is all gone, then fill with bondo, prime, rust o;leum?, What, can you tell me I never did this before lol?  Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi! If this is a reoccuring problem, which it sounds like it is, the best method of repair if you want to do this yourself would be to take the door off. Sandblast or grind the affected areas with 36 grit to see how much area needs to be replaced. Cut out the affected areas and install a patch. Unfortunatley according to my catalogue, no patch panels are available for this application. You would have to fabricate them yourself. If this is possible, you can weld them in using a mig or glue them in. 3M and Norton have excellent adheisives for this type of application. Check you local autobody retailer. Once installed, the best method of repair would be a first coat of fiberglass followed by a high quality body filler, next a finishing putty to get rid of pinholes. Prime and refinish accordingly. Another option is to check out your local auto wrecker for a quality used door. Let me know how you make out!
