Auto body repair & detailing: toyota avalon hood adjustment, radiator support, toyota avalon

Question
In my daughter's 1999 Toyota Avalon, the hood is down and latched, but has 1/2 inch vertical freeplay at the front, where it meets the grille. When you drive, you can see it (and hear it) moving up and down as the car goes over bumps. But I can find no way to adjust it. The u-shaped piece that goes into the latch, and the latch itself, are seem to be bolted in one fixed position. Any ideas? Thanks for your help. (She did dent the right front fender, behind the tire, several years ago, but not badly, I thought.)

Answer
The bolts on the striker need loosened, and the latch moved down. If it has no adjustment, the striker can be removed, the holes slotted larger, and extra adjustment is gained. I suspect that she has run the bottom of the radiator support up on a concrete parking bumper, or something like that. It has pushed up the bottom of the radiator support, and driven up the striker support. I would check the bottom of the front of the vehicle for potential damage to the radiator, or A/C cooling condenser. I may be wrong, but it's a good idea to have a look. Bill
