Auto body repair & detailing: rust, rust holes, tiny blisters

Question
I have a 97 dodge van 1500 that did not show signs of rust holes 9 months ago. Is it possible for these holes to pop up over 9 months time? The holes are in the rear floor area. thanks, Don

Answer
Yes, Don, it's possible. The rust came from underneath, and slowly worked their way through the panel. A panel often times doesn't show much outward sign of a problem, but a few tell tale signs will always tip off the trained eye. Tiny blisters leaking water are always rust through, even if the outer panel appears to be intact. Once a hole has started all the way through, it seems to go like wild fire. That's because the damage actually started years ago, and by the time tiny blisters show up, the damage is done. Folks sometimes stop by for an estimate for rust repair, and they think it's just surface rust. When I push my tiny pocket screwdriver through, it's undeniable, to myself, and to the owner- it's a rust out. Bill
