Auto body repair & detailing: Car Door Wont Stay Shut, nissan pathfinder, sticker shock

Question
I have a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder SUV, and recently my driver's side door has failed to stay shut. I can close the door, but the lock mechanism doesn't catch, so the door won't stay shut. I have read up a little on the issue and I believe that there is something wrong with the linkage of the latch mechanism. If  I move the latch manually, it won't lock as it should. Furthermore, when I pull up on the door handle the latch does not release because it did not catch in the first place. Is this something I can repair myself, and if so, how do I go about fixing it?

Answer
The first order of business is to obtain a new latch which you will have to go to the dealer for.Be prepared for sticker shock latches are pricey. If you have some mechanical ability you can do the job in about 1 hr.First you have to remove the trim panel, locate the screws by the inside handle and arm rest.Remove them and gently pry the trim panel away from the door. You can then access the latch, you have to disconnect the rods from the outer handle, remove the three screws that hold it in place, and fish it out of the door.Install in reverse order, but make sure everything works properly before installing the trim.
