Auto body repair & detailing: cross member repair/replacement, chevy silverado 4x4, chevy silverado

Question
My question is as follows, I recently bent the front cross member of my 2002 chevy silverado 4x4 truck, and the insurance company is having a repair shop cut it off and taking one from another vehicle and having it welded back on, i have been told by others this is not a good repair, is this correct?

Answer
I would say that this is probably not a good repair.But... if it is put in at a factory joint and the person doing the repair has good welding ability then it should be O.K.,but Im not sure if this is recommended on these frames. The other option you have is to contact G.M.and ask what the repair procedure is in this situation. The newer trucks have a hydroformed frame that can only be welded in certain areas.I would definitely check into this to make sure.
