Auto body repair & detailing: Paint Brand, dupont automotive paint, chevy s10

Question
Hi Bill,

I have a 1970 VW beetle I want to repaint in a single stage. This is a daily driver, and want a paint that will last with regular waxing. Can you recommend a paint brand to use, and
is economical in price for the paint, hardener and reducer due to limited funds. And possibly where I can purchase them online ?

Also, I know there isn't a paint color actually called fire engine red, but do you happen know the color name or code used on the standard red fire trucks by chance ?

Thanks,

Robyn

Answer
Hello Robyn! Nason make an excellent, economical acrylic enamel. It sprays great, and it should be readily available anywhere DuPont automotive paint is sold. Use Painters pride acrylic enamel hardner, it's also very economical, and works great. Now, Nason has a limited color selection, but you should be fine with red solid colors. As far as fire engine red, all manufacturers have their own formulas, there is no universal fire engine red. The red I suggest, if available, is 2000 chevy S10 red. I'll try to gat back to you with a paint code. It's a very bright red, without being orange. It'll look great. Also, get a quart of white sealer. Red is very transparent, and a coat of white sealer will give a nice, bright, uniform color base to lay the red down on top of. It will take less paint to color the beetle, also. Don't leave this step out, you will hate yourself for it. I've never tried any of those paint job kits on ebay, and would be afraid to. They could cover horribly, or not be resistant to gasoline, or the ravages of the sun. Nasan is good stuff, it covers well. You might also consider Omni acrylic enamel, should you not be able to find Nason. It should be available anywhere they sell PPG (Ditzler) paint. I would call professional parts stores like Napa, Big A, or Car Quest for automotive paint in your area. If you run out, or you have a problem, and you bought it on line, what will you do? You only have a few hours to recoat without having to completely stop, and resand the car.      bill
