Auto body repair & detailing: your advice needed, mazda 626, acceptable range

Question
Hello Mike and Lisa,

I am not sure how this works, but I figure it would not hurt to try! I have a 2001 Mazda 626. I mistakenly backed into an air pump at a gas station. There was damage to the trunk and one back light (other is fine). The trunk will not shut properly but does not look bad. The light needs full replacement. I took the car in for estimates at two local Body Shops. Keep in mind this is New York City, so the cost may be higher.

Anyway, one quote was $1500 and the other $1900. All I want to know is if this is a generally acceptable range, give or take a few hundred dollars..OR..if I am getting taken. ANY info you could provide would be tremendously appreciated. If not, thanks for reading this at least and have a great day.

Regards,
Matt

Answer
Hello Matt,
This sounds a little high for our area.  Our hourly rates here are 40.00/hr for labor and refinish.  20.00/hr for materials.  It may be in your best interest to get a third or fourth estimate to be sure.
Are you turning this into your insurance company?  If you are, the insurance company will make sure the estimate is fair.  If not, go out and get those other estimates.  Be sure not to show any of the other estimates to the shop you are at.
Thank you,
Mike and Lisa
