Auto Glass: 99 Toyota rear power window problem, window regulators, salvage yard

Question
About 2 weeks ago our rear driver's side power window just stopped working. It sounds like the motor is working but nothing happens. Also, the window feels loose when you pull up on it. Then a couple of days ago the other rear window did the same thing. We'd appreciate any help you could give us. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Teresa,

I suspect that the mechanisms (window regulators) have both broken.  I don't see this problem very often on this vintage (1997-2001) of Camry, but I do find it occasionally.

You must replace the window regulators to solve these problems.  You have three choices to obtain the parts.

1. Purchase new window regulators (no motors) from Toyota for about $120 each plus tax.

2. Purchase "aftermarket" window regulator & motor assemblies from your local auto parts store for about $110 each plus tax.

3. Purchase salvaged window regulator & motor assemblies from a salvage yard for about $50 each plus tax.

If you can't do the job yourself, then you will need to add the cost of labor to arrive at the final price.  Someone with power window experience should be able to install both parts in 60 to 90 minutes.

If you are curious about what these parts look like you can go to "dormanproducts.com" and type in 741-829 and 741-830 into the "Part Number" box to see a picture.

Send a follow up question if there is anything else I can help with.
