Auto Glass: 2001 Ford Ranger Driver Window, ranger driver, ford ranger

Question
I have a 2001 Ford Ranger. On the driver's side, the window moves up and down perfectly fine. However, when it gets all the way to the top and the button is pushed, the motor keeps trying to push the window further up even though it is already at the top. I have tried replaced the power windows switch, but the problem remained. Also, the window rattles when I am driving but does not come down.

Answer
Hi Daniel,

The problem you describe is fairly common on this vintage of Ranger.

Let me start by describing how this particular window mechanism works.  A small gear on the window motor is connected to a larger gear on the window regulator.  As the motor gear moves the gear on the regulator, the motion is transferred to an arm which moves the glass up and down inside the door.  The problem you describe happens when the last few teeth on the window regulator gear are worn out.  Instead of pushing the glass up securely in the top of the door, the gear on the motor slips across the last few teeth of the regulator and continues to spin as long as you supply power to the motor with the switch button.

The only solution is to replace the regulator.  It is not too difficult a job for some one with a reasonable amount of power window experience.  It isn't impossible for a do-it-yourselfer, but it is a little harder than most power window repairs, because the regulator is riveted to the inside of the door.

To see what the regulator looks like go to "dormanproducts.com" and type in 740-831 in the part number search box.

You can send me a follow up question if I can help in some other way.
