Auto Glass: 1994 civic driver window, rubber gasket, glass run

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1994 Honda Civic the window will not go up and down straight. |The window gets tilted and falls out of the track.

ANSWER: Hi Ken,

The problem you describe could be caused by a couple of different issues.

Is your Civic a two door or four door?

Have you taken the door panel off yet?

Get back to me with the answers to those two questions and I will do my best to give you a few suggestions on what to look for.

QUESTION: It is a two door. I've taken the door panel off. When we got the car the window wound not go up or down. I put the window back in the track but it won't stay in the track.

Answer
Hi Ken,

This is a common problem on this vintage of 2 door Civic.  Below are my suggestions.

1.  Remove the glass from the regulator and take the glass out of the door.

2.  There are six 10MM bolts that hold the regulator to the inside of the door.  Remove the two bolts on the left.  You will notice that the opening in the door for the bolt that is the farthest to the left is a slot, not a circle.  Using a rat tail file, make the slot about 1/4" to 3/8" longer toward the bottom.  Now, replace the two bolts making sure that the rear bolt is as far down in the slot as possible.  This adjustment moves the glass a bit forward.

3. Use spray silicone (no other lubricant is acceptable) to lubricate the rubber gasket ("glass run channel gasket") that the glass slides up and down in.  Any spray silicone will work.  You can find some inexpensive brands at the various home stores.  Be sure to get the silicone inside the entire length of the run channel.

4.  Also check to be certain that the metal channel that holds the run channel gasket at the front of the door is secure and isn't bent in any way.  Also be sure that the run channel gasket fits properly in the metal channel.

5.  Re-install the glass and check for proper operation.

If the glass still won't stay in the front run channel, you'll probably have to invest in a new window regulator.

Let me know how things turn out.
