Auto Glass: 2004 Toyota Highlander Rear Window, 2004 toyota highlander, seal gasket

Question
QUESTION: How do you get the right rear window out of a 2004 Toyota Highlander to repair a broken arm that lifts the window up and down?  Can you give me step-by-step directions.

ANSWER: Hello Michael,

The arm that lifts the window is not broken.  The arm will not lift the window because the guide on the end of the arm is no longer in the metal channel on the bottom of the glass.  This happened when the metal channel moved out of position on the glass.

Removing the glass from the door is too complicated a job for someone without significant power window repair or glass replacement experience.  I suggest you contact several glass shops to see if you can find someone who has made this repair before.

I am sorry I can't be more helpful. I don't want you trying to do something I think you will not be able to do.

QUESTION: The channel sub assembly is broken where it is rivited on to the assembly that attaches to the window.  I have the piece bought it from the Toytoa dealer $24.00 I need to figure how to get the window out to take off the rest of the assembly and put the new one on.  Any steps or help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Michael,

I am not sure what a "channel sub assembly" is, but I will give you an rough outline of what you need to do to remove the door glass.

1. lower the door glass to the bottom of the door.

2. on the top edge of the door, above the small triangular shaped glass, peel back the rubber door seal gasket and remove the screw(s) that hold the glass frame to the door.

3. remove the glass run channel (rubber gasket) from the door frame around the glass.

4. remove the 10MM bolt(s) that secure the vertical rear metal glass channel under the small triangular shaped glass.

5. remove the small triangular shaped piece of glass and the metal frame/channel by pulling it toward the front of the door and then lifting the whole assembly out of the door.

6. now you have room to remove the glass from inside the door.

I DON'T RECOMMEND THAT YOU TRY DOING THIS YOURSELF, SO I AM GIVING YOU THIS INFORMATION AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGMENT.  IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY DIFFICULTY, YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A GLASS SHOP TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
