Auto Glass: windshield surface scratches, Scratches vs Scuffs

Question
QUESTION: Derek,
While cleaning some bird droppings off my windshield ('08 BMW), I noticed (from the inside in certain light) that there are some surface scratches where I cleaned.  I've never had this happen to me before.  Is there any way to polish this out?  BMW glass seems very soft.

ANSWER: Hi Dave,

Windshield surface scratches can be polished out with a special wheel + super fine  compound.

The process is messy and the whole windshield is covered except for the area to be polished.

The cost varies from shop to shop and the time required to take out the marks.

Your Windshield is up there in price so I would try to have it Polished.

Other makes are not so expensive and not worth the time and effort.

The General rule is:  If you can feel the scratch with your finger nail it is not going to come out very well.

If your on Long Island we can look at it for you!

QUESTION: Derek,
Thanks for the quick response. I'm in Los Angeles, Calif. Is this a service that most windshield replacement companies would offer?  I'm afraid that they'll just say the windshield needs replacement. Approximately what would it cost?

Answer
HI Dave,

You never did give me the Model of this 08 BMW,
so I could not tell you what a new windshield would run you but
most all 08 BMW glass is over 400.00.

No glass company is going to tell a customer
he must shell out 500-600.00 without trying to repair it first.
If we could do the polishing job we would charge about 125.00.

Again if the scratches are too deep they will tell you about
         the finger nail Rule!

Also if you cleaned the glass with a Metal object it could just be scuffed, and
that is just metal transfer or rub as we call them and are much easier
         to remove then Scratches!!

         Hope This Helps!! Derek =D
