Auto Glass: 2006 Dodge Ram - track off bottom of glass, emery cloth, locking pliers

Question
I have a 2006 dodge ram and the glass popped out of the track at the bottom. What if any thing need to be put in the glass track to keep it from coming out again, glue epoxy or etc.

Answer
Hi John,

I have not had a lot of experience with this specific problem on this particular make and model, but I can give you some advice that I am sure will apply to your situation.

The first thing you need to do is mark the EXACT location where the track attaches to the glass.  If you don't install the track in the same spot on the glass, the window regulator will not work properly.

Clean off any left over adhesive from the glass with a razor blade and sand the glass lightly with fine sand paper or emery cloth.  Just be sure that you don't remove the marks that you will need to re-mount the track.

The next thing you should do is clean the old adhesive out of the track.  For safety reasons, I recommend that you put the track in a vise or hold it with a pair of locking pliers.  Then use a drill bit just a tad larger than the width of the track to remove the left over adhesive from the track.  It doesn't have to be perfectly clean, but the new adhesive needs a good surface to create a secure bond.

After you have cleaned the track you can "test" fit it onto the glass.  It should be snug enough to stay on the glass, but not so tight that you have to use a lot of pressure to install it on the glass.  Adjust the fit as needed.

I suggest you use a two part epoxy to re-secure the track to the glass.  Your local hardware store will have one or more choices that are compatible for bonding metal and glass.  Put a small amount of adhesive along the edge of the glass first.  Then line the entire length of the track with adhesive, but don't over-fill the track or it will ooze all over when you install the track on the glass.  Be sure to let the glue cure properly before trying to re-install the glass back inside the door.

If all this sounds like more work than it is worth, you can always get a used window glass from your local salvage yard.

Feel free to send a follow up question if there is anything else you need help with.
