Auto Glass: rear window side not rolling up, noise situation, kia optima

Question
Hi Ben, I already sent you a question last week about my Kia Optima 2001. The power window on the right rear window side is not rolling up. You sent me a link that prompts me to a website that shows the window regulator.

I examined the window closely..When I tried to push the master button (driver's side)for that rear window side,  I can hear a sound as if it's rolling but it does not move at all. When I push the specific button on that side of the window, no sounds at all.

Like I said, I have no background on car electricals and so I don't know where to start. What would you suggest to be the first step to check what could be the possible problem?

I want to make sure I'm getting all advice/inputs from different people so I know my options before I even go see a mechanic. I heard this could be pricey if I just go straight to a repair shop without even checking. Maybe it's just the fuse or something that I can fix myself.

Thank you and appreciate your willingness to help!

Answer
Hi Paul,

If you hear noise from inside the door, but the window doesn't move, there are two likely causes.  (#1 is the most likely)

1.  The cable style window regulator has failed and someone has raised the glass and put something underneath the glass to hold it up.

2.  The plastic mounting brackets on the bottom of the glass are broken and someone has raised the glass and put something underneath the glass to hold it up.

As far as the no noise situation when you press the individual button on the door the most likely explanation is:

1.  The "window lock" button on your master window switch is engaged and no power  is going to the right rear switch.

If the "window lock" button on the master switch is not engaged there are too many possible causes to list in this email.  However, it is safe to say that your problem is not a fuse.

As a final note, any decent mechanic with a reasonable amount of power window experience should be able to listen to the window and tell you what is wrong and what it will cost to repair it.  That information shouldn't cost you anything more than a little of your time.
