Auto Glass: rear ds window 1999 toyota camry le, ds window, toyota camry

Question
QUESTION: the power window wont go up/down. i removed the panel, the window appears to be on the track and i can hear the motor hum but nothing is moving.
Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Mike,

I would like a little more information please.

Is the window up, down, or in between?

What does "hum" mean?  Is the motor turning?

Does the motor "hum" all the time or just when you activate the window switch?

Do you have the ability / tools necessary to check for voltage at the window switches and window motor?

Thanks, Ben ... the power window guy

QUESTION: The window is in between, I can pull it up(it won't stay).
The motor sounds like it is turning when i activate the switch up or down but looking at it with the panel off nothing is moving. I could have my neighbor, an electrician, test voltage. Thanks Ben

Mike

Answer
Hello Mike,

Thanks for the additional information.

From what you have told me I think you can rule out any problems in the electrical portion of the system.  That leaves us with two likely explanations for what is going on.  Either the gears in the head of the motor are slipping or the teeth on the window regulator are worn so badly that the drive gear in the motor isn't moving the regulator.  You will need to remove the regulator to be sure which problem you have.  Follow the steps outlined below.

1.  Remove the door panel.

2.  Disconnect the electrical connector from the vehicle to the motor.

3.  Position the window so that you can remove the two bolts (10mm) that hold the glass onto the lifting channel (horizontal bar) of the window regulator.  BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU PUT YOUR FINGERS!  If the gears in the motor are completely shot the regulator return spring will try to raise the lifting channel up as you remove the glass and could easily pinch your hand / fingers.

4.  Slide the glass up all the way and secure it with a piece of tape.

5.  Locate and remove the six bolts (10mm) that hold the window regulator assembly to the inside of the door.

6.  Remove the regulator assembly from the door.

7.  BE CAREFUL!  Use a clamp or locking pliers to the secure the motor mounting plate to the toothed portion of the regulator.  This is important to prevent injury caused by the return spring of the regulator swinging the motor plate around after you remove the motor.

8.  Remove the window motor from the regulator.

9.  Examine the regulator for worn teeth.

10. Plug the motor back into the car's wiring system and activate the switch up and down while holding onto the drive gear of the motor with a pair of locking pliers.  If you can prevent the gear from turning the motor gears are shot.

Once you determine what is wrong, you can purchase
A.  a salvaged window regulator and motor
B.  a new motor from a local parts store*
C.  a new motor/regulator from a local parts store*

Let me know what other questions I can answer for you.
