Auto Glass: Celica Convertible rear windows, silicone spray, rubber seals

Question
My 99 Celica convertible rear windows go down fine but are slow to come up and stop about 3/4 the way up.  I need to pull them up.

Is this the motor or will lubricant solve the problem.

Answer
Hi Ken,

I believe that the failure rate on Toyota window motors from 1997-2002 increased a bit over the previous design used from 1992-1996.  During the course of a normal year I replace several window motors on that vintage of Corolla, Camry, etc.  So I am guessing that weak window motors are causing the problem.

On the other hand, a little lubrication certainly won't hurt anything.  Use a silicone spray for the rubber seals on the convertible top that close against the edges of the window glass.  Spray the seals liberally and wipe off the excess with a soft cloth.  If you don't have any silicone on hand, you can find it at your local Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.  Cheap silicone works just as well as expensive so don't pay more than $3 or $4 for a can.  Just be sure not to use any kind of lubricant except silicone.

Properly lubricating the window lift mechanisms (regulators) is impossible without removing them.  That job is definitely an "expert repair."  Spraying some silicone down inside the "hole" where the mechanisms sit might get some lubricant on the applicable parts, but it is definitely a shot in the dark.

Sorry I can't be more encouraging.  I realize that pulling the windows up is inconvenient, but when you compare that to the cost of replacing the motors,($250 or more each?) it won't seem so bad.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
