Auto Glass: Rear window glass in 69 Dodge Dart, Butyl tape

Question
QUESTION: I had my 69 Dart painted (rear window removed and replaced). The rear window leaks bad know. I bought a knew gasket and removed the window to repair the leak. The factory repair manual shows a polyethylene seal strip that goes next to the body flange. Evidently the body shop removed it and lost it. They installed the glass and seal without it. This must be why it leaked. I have not been able to find a new one or anyone who knows what I am talking about. Do you know of a source or a better way to do this?

ANSWER: Hi Price,

Ok I was born in 1963 and started doing glass at 14 years old so I don't remember doing too many of these almost indestructible 69 Dart back glasses but of what I can remember is they were very heavy and well made, and a Big pain in the ass to install as  most of the older Dodge and Plymouth Front and rear Glass rubber sets were! But the real reason they were so hard to do is they were tight and tough, Tight rubber and tough thick glass and the two worked well.,

So well in fact minus the fancy chrome that covered the rubber till the 70's Dodge continued to use the same setup for another Twenty + years! So the good news is:

If your back mouldings calls for a 1/4 round insert you can steal one whole front windshields worth off of any 78-90 dodge pick up. If it calls for the tear drop spline that looks round on top and has a v that fits into the grove of the rubber you can get this from the 80-90 Dodge van.  If none of these will work or you want new send me the measurements and I get it for you or I probably have it here Somewhere? Hope this Helps! Stay Safe! Derek :)

QUESTION: I think you are talking about a lockstrip. The piece I am talking about is shown in the following attachments.

Answer
Hi price,

The polyethylene seal they refer to here is commonly called Butyl tape. a high viscosity dried bubble gum like sealer that is made of rubber and petroleum base compounds that comes in a roll. The sizes and shapes range from 1/8 square to 1/2 round Depending on the space between the two materials that need to be sealed and is available at any glass shop or can be ordered from an Auto supply and even Ebay.  I could just make out the picture that you sent but I do not think they used over 1/4 to seal that back rubber back in.

Hope this Helps! Derek : )
