Auto Glass: Driver side window, 2001 oldsmobile aurora, oldsmobile aurora

Question
Hi, I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora. My driver side window stop working. Every time i push the button I hear a clicking noise coming from the module. I replaced the module and it still doesn't work. So, what can the problem be?

Answer
Hi Tim,

This is difficult to diagnose "remotely".  Especially since problems on Auroras are pretty rare so far.

At least five things come to mind that could be the source of your problem.

1.  A bad switch ... not likely since you have already replaced it.

2.  A bad cable regulator (the mechanism that moves the window up and down) ... again not likely because you are getting no movement of any kind.  A bad regulator typically allows the window to fall down part way, but will not raise it back up.  To see a picture of what a regulator looks like, go onto EBay and search under "Aurora window regulator".

3.  A bad motor ... not impossible but rare.  Try this series of steps.  Start the engine, open the door, press and hold the window button down with your right hand, now shut the door hard with your left hand.  We are trying to "jar" the motor to get it to run.  If you do this two or three times and the window doesn't work, it is probably not the window motor.

4.  Broken wiring ... the bundle of wires that connects to the switch on your driver's door armrest goes through a rubber boot near the hinges on the door.  They "flex" every time this door opens and closes.  Sometimes the flexing causes one or more of the wires to break.  Try opening the door and operating the switch.  If you don't get any response, reach down and "massage" the wires in the boot while you have the switch pressed down.  If the window responds your definitely have a wiring problem.  (See item 6)

5.  Solid state component ... I don't have access to an Aurora wiring diagram as I type this, but I suspect your Aurora uses some type of solid state device in the window wiring circuit.  Diagnosis of problems with these devices is over my head.

6.  If you don't get any results from my suggestions, I recommend that you find someone who specializes in "automotive electronics."  If your Yellow Pages doesn't contain any listings under that heading, talk to a few mechanics and ask for recommendations.

When you finally get the problem solved, let me know what happened.

Good Luck,

Ben  ..... the power window guy.
