Auto Parts: 1 broken wiper arm, drive shaft, wiper blade

Question
I have a 2005 buick rendevzous cxl and the passengers side wiper is not working. The drivers side wiper is working just fine. When the wipers are off and I try to move it, it seems a bit loose where as the other one has some resistance. Any idea what the problem might be and is it an easy fix? I was given a ball park range of $200-225 from the dealer. However I have a mechanically inclined brother who may be able to do it for much cheaper.

Answer
Hello Melissa,

I apologize for getting back to you so late, it has been a very busy week.

The problem you are experiencing is a common one.  I get them in my shop often.  What has happened is that your passenger side wiper arm either A) Has snapped completely from the motor. or B) The teeth of the gear that moves it are worn out or getting worn out.

This is normally a simple fix, consisting of replacing the wiper arm and possibly the motor depending on how the wipers are setup.

Please read the instructions below to replace your wiper arm.

***NOTE:  You will need the following special tools to complete this project
1. J 39822 Wiper Arm Puller

To remove the Arm:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the Accessory position.
2. Turn the wiper switch to the DELAY position.
3. Turn the ignition off when the wiper arms are in the INNER WIPE position and not moving,
4. Disconnect the washer hose from the washer nozzle.
5. Remove the cover from the wiper arm nut.
6. Remove the wiper arm nut from the wiper transmission drive shaft.
7. Using J 39822, Remove the wiper arm from the wiper transmission drive shaft.
8. Remove the wiper blade from the wiper arm, Retain the blade for the new arm, unless you are replacing the blades also (Recommended).
9. Clean the KNURLS of the wiper transmission drive shaft, with a wire brush.

Installation Procedure:

1. Install The wiper blade (either a new one "RECOMMENDED" or the retained one) into the wiper arm.
2. Install the wiper arm onto the wiper transmission drive shaft.
3. Measure the distance from the wiper blade tip to the solid edge of the windshield blackout.  Position the wiper arms at the following distances:
LH - 40 mm (1.57 in) above the glass blackout.
RH - 160 mm (6.30 in) below the glass blackout.

IMPORTANT: Hold the measuring tape at 90 degrees (Perpendicular) to the wiper blade tip

4. Install the wiper arm nut onto the wiper transmission drive shaft.
Tighten the NUT to 48 N.m (Nanometers) (35 LB FT)

5. Install the cover on the wiper arm nut.
6. Install the washer hose to the washer nozzle.

IMPORTANT: Lubricate the washer hose with the windshield washer solvent to ease installation on the washer nozzle.

7. Inspect the wipers for proper operation.

I hope this helps you.

Please let me know how you make out, and if you need further assistance.

Good Luck, Thank you.
