Auto Parts: 1969 VW distrubutor cap, dune buggy, distributor shaft

Question
I have a 1969 VW engine.  I have had trouble with getting it to start in the rain and I was told that there is some kind of liner that can put under the distributor cap to keep moisture from interfering with the motor starting.  Is there such a thing?  Thanks.

Answer
You didn't say what the engine is mounted in.  If it's out in the open (dune buggy, etc.) you are going to have problems.  The best thing to do is to go to a parts store and buy a spray can of plastic sealer intended for ignition wires (Solder Seal makes one, as do Permatex).  Use a new cap and new wires.  Hose the whole system down with the sealer, including the edge of the cap where it fits over the distributor body.  This should take care of the problem.  You can also have a problem with moisture migrating up the distributor shaft from inside the engine and condensing inside the cap.  The usual cure for this is to drill a very small hole in the cap to ventilate the interior (many caps come with the hole already drilled).  So you need to make sure it's the rain and not condensation causing your problem before you do anything.  Also, make sure you coat the coil wire and the top of the coil.  Examine the coil tower closely to make sure that it doesn't have a crack in it; this can allow spark to leak out and never make it to the cap.
