Auto Parts: 2005 Toyota Rav4 Steering Link Gear Assembly, 2005 toyota rav4, flexible coupling

Question
I was told I need to replace the steering link gear assembly in my Rav4 due to a clunking noise heard in the steering column when making a turn.  I was also told it was safe to drive.  If we don't get the repair done (quite costly), is there a safety concern or will we just have to put up with an occasional clunking noise.

Answer
Well, I wonder what they mean by "steering link gear assembly?"  This vehicle is not all that old, unless it is has a lot of miles on it.  I am going to go out on a limb and say that they want to replace the rack & pinion assembly.  This shouldn't wear out until at least a hundred thousand miles have gone by.  And, even then, it shouldn't clunk.  I am also going to guess that you had this estimate done at a dealer.  If they are going to cover this work under warranty, then they are the logical place to go.  But, if they are making you pay for the whole thing, then run away, run away!  You should go to a reputable garage (not a chain store) and have them look.  Worn-out racks don't usually clunk, and not in the steering column.  I have a feeling that the flexible coupling between the rack and the column itself is worn.  Replacing it should be inexpensive.  Get the guy at the shop to show (take you out to the car on the lift and point at the bad part) you what's wrong and why.  If you have a hard time finding a good mechanic, go to the local independent parts store (again, NOT a chain store) and ask for their recommendation.  They deal with these guys every day and they know who does good work and who doesn't.  If it is the coupler between the column and the rack, then get it fixed, it could become a safety issue.  The bushings that hold the rack in place are another possibility, and they should be replaced if worn.  The dealer probably wanted to sell you the whole rack since he had to take it out and put it back in to do the job.
