Answer
If I had to guess I'd say that you have an ECM failure.  That would put the engine and all systems in "limp-home" mode.  It would reduce power, deactivate the ABS, and behave poorly.  They do this for two reasons.  First is to prevent anything being damaged and second is to make sure you notice it and get it fixed instead of driving around with the "check engine" light on.  BMW uses a much more complex computer system than any American car, however.  You are going to have to take it to the dealer or to a tech who has invested in all of the equipment needed to analyze and program the computers in the car.  Otherwise you will be wasting your money.  I had a customer once, with a Mercedes, whose built-in cell phone had learned how to turn off the engine.  And it did it regularly via the ring-type LAN that connects all of the electronics on late model Mercs.  It took a week of diagnosis and finally resulted in a software patch being downloaded from Stuttgart.  Go to the dealer, even if it hurts the wallet, the car is pretty much value-less otherwise.
