Auto Parts: 2001 Hyundai Elantra Transmission problems, hyundai elantra, speed sensors

Question
My transmission slips between 1st and 2nd gear and I have to back off the gas to keep engine from over revving. In last year, my Dealer replaced two speed sensors - upper and lower. After the 2nd sensor was replaced, I noticed that it didn't shift very well. Just before the warrantee expired, I took it back to the dealer but they couldn't find anything wrong with it -- of course. Over several months it got worse and I took it back again. The dealer said it can't be fixed and it will have to be replaced. They told me to drive it until it dies. They want $2400+labor to replace it with a remanufactured transmission but they claim it comes with a 100K warrantee.

Answer
Well, I have to admit that it sounds like a problem in the transmission, not one of the sensors.  that price does seem a little steep, though.  Here's the scandalous truth about automatic transmissions: almost all mechanics are afraid to work on them or learn how.  That's why they always sell you a rebuilt one, a monkey can change one out.  Here's the other scandalous truth: automatic transmissions are actually very easy to repair once you've taken the time to learn how.  At the shop down the street they have a blind man rebuilding them, and they don't get any comebacks.  Somewhere around you there is a fellow, probably working out of his house or a small out-of-the-way shop, who can repair your transmission for much less than you have been quoted.  You will have to start asking around at used car lots and import garages until one of them will tell you the name of this guy and how to get hold of him.  Ask the mechanics, they are usually friendlier than the owners.  And, if you give up and get them to replace the transmission with a rebuilt unit insist that it include a new torque converter.  A lot of shops, especially dealers, will use the old converter over.  It's full of debris from the failed transmission and MUST be replaced.
