Auto Parts: 2007 ford expedition, receiver hitches, trailer brakes

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2007 Ford Expedition.  It currently does not have the heavy duty tow package, but I heard if you want to tow more (8000pds--its currently rated at 6000) you can by installing a heavy duty tranny cooler.  How accurate is this and can you point me in the right direction as to a good tranny cooler for my expedition?

ANSWER:      A factory towing package includes a lot of things.  Usually it will include a bigger capacity battery, but Ford doesn't make a bigger one than the one you already have.  It will generally include a bigger radiator and an external trans cooler.  On Fords it usually means an engine oil cooler as well.  The main thing is that it will include a shorter gear in the rear end (and front end in the case of 4WD)  If you live in an area that does not include a lot of long steep grades, such as near the East or Gulf coast or in the flat part of the midwest, the axles are not all that important.  But if there are hills involved and the load you are contemplating is really over 6000 lbs (6000 lbs is a lot), then you will at least want to get a trans cooler.  You should also consider an engine oil cooler; the one Ford makes is easily adapted to your engine.  You might have one anyway, get under the truck and look at the oil filter.  If there are two water hoses attached to a spacer between the filter and the block, then you have an oil cooler.  You have a trans cooler, but you should get an extra external cooler for towing, they are cheap and give a lot of piece of mind.  And a trans rebuild on that thing is probably $2500.  If you do all of this and the engine still insists on running hot, go to the local radiator specialist and see about a bigger capacity radiator.  You also need to make sure that you have hitch rated to tow that load (most receiver hitches don't go that high).  At 8000 lbs you should really also have trailer brakes and a controller.  This is something that Ford made available in their big diesel trucks as standard equipment, but you will most likely have to buy one at an RV dealer or truck accessories store.

QUESTION: I have a 3.73 final drive ratio.  The camper I tow now is around 4,500 pounds dry weight.  The camper I am looking at is 6,200 pounds dry weight.  I don't know where I came up with 8,000lbs.  I have a nice weight distribution hitch and trailer brakes/controller.  My local Ford dealer told me I would have to buy an after market tranny cooler.  Can you help me find a good tranny cooler for my expo...I have no idea what to look for or where to find one.

Answer
You should be able to buy an aftermarket trans cooler just about anywhere that sells auto parts.  Definitely you could get one at an RV dealer.  Get one size bigger than you need, then you won't have to worry about it working right.  They sell them rated by gross weight. Add the weight of the trailer to the truck and add some extra for whatever.
