Auto Parts: 2001 vw passat buy or not, rear axle seal, vw passat

Question
A guy is selling me a 2001 vw passat v6 4wheel drive 138k for $3500. Interior is great, its leather all nice. the car has a gasket leak and also the mechanic picked it up and said there is a rear axle seal leak, will I be able to drive this car for 2 years without replacing anything but just instead adding oil? or maybe its  to risky? im not to familiar with vw's. take it or leave it?
Thanks alott

Answer
The axle seal leak can probably be handled by adding whatever fluid is leaking when it needs it.  Most cars have leaks of one sort or another in their rear ends.  Usually it just weeps fluid, enough to see but not enough to make a difference.  I had a customer who would take his customers out to the lift and show them the weeping from the pinion seal.  He would then convince them to have him replace it.  Truth is, all pinion seals weep a little gear oil, maybe a teaspoon each year, and they don't need to be replaced.  I stocked a full range of pinion seals just to take care of this guy's racket.

The gasket leak I can't say 'cause I don't know which gasket.  If the leaking fluid is easily monitored, and you are willing to commit to monitoring it, then you can probably get away with it.  That's provided nothing else goes wrong.  You had a mechanic look at it, so you have to believe what he says.  The price he is giving you on the car is substantially below the blue book, so it sounds like a good deal.  I'd try and get the price down a little, just for kicks.  It'll give you a good measure of how desperate the guy is to unload this car.
