Auto Parts: 88 Ciera 3.8L No Spark, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor

Question
I have changed the 3 coils, The module, and ECM, and now i just dont know I have tested 12V to the module but the coils are showing nothing, But I have 6 extra coil and I know its not all 9coils that are bad! I grounded the batt with a jumper cable to the engine still nothing. So maybe the crank senor? Im about to give up"

Answer
The crankshaft sensor is the most likely suspect.  It provides the triggering signal to the timing module, which then fires the ignition module.  I kind of liked this system when it was first introduced, but now feel that it is kind of halfassed.  If they had had the computing power available then that they do now, they could have done a much better job.  Another very common problem with these engines is the camshaft sensor.  It is used to trigger the fuel injection.  The setup consists of a hall-effect switch in the end of the sensor (which is fitted to the timing cover), and a tiny magnet mounted in a holder that is bolted to the upper timing gear.  The magnet is cemented into its slot in the holder.  When the cement gets old and loses its grip on the magnet the centrifugal force of the spinning gear forces it out until it strikes the sensor and breaks it.  The good part is that the parts are very cheap, the bad part is that the whole front of the engine has to come off to get at the magnet.
