Auto Parts: freon, r 134a refrigerant, r134a refrigerant

Question
what type of freon do you use in a 2000 plymouth voyager?

Answer
Everything built after the early '90's uses R-134a refrigerant.  "Freon" is a DuPont brand name for the line of refrigerants that they manufacture, and R134a is an industry term for the particular formulation now used in automobiles.  It is manufactured by DuPont, but also by many others.  So, the answer is, you should (must, in fact) use R134a refrigerant, which can be purchased at any auto parts store, along with the appropriate fittings for installing it in the car.  None of the gear (gauges, fittings, oil, etc.) used with the old R-12 is compatible with the newer cars equipment.  If you are just topping off (only one can) it's OK to do it yourself.  But, if it is very low or needs to be totally refilled, then you need to go to a pro and get him to vacuum out the system and install the correct amount of refrigerant.  These newer systems are more sensitive than the older ones, and must have the correct weight of refrigerant installed.  Any pro will have the charts, etc. needed to do this correctly.
