Auto Parts: 91 GMC Jimmy Fuel Pump, gmc jimmy, road hazard
QuestionOK maybe this is a dumb question but WHERE is the fuel pump on a 91 Jimmy. I live in Chicago & hit a Chi-Town road hazard & my truck croaked, The tow truck said it may be the fuel pump so we need to checked it out, but I don't know where it is to do so. & what all I need to do to change it or if I may just have to read just it some how.

Answer The fuel pump, as in all GM fuel-injected vehicles, is in the gas tank. It is an electric high-pressure pump and hitting a road hazard is not likely to have damaged it unless you put a REALLY big dent in the tank right below the pump. You will have to remove the tank in order to change the pump, so I suggest checking the fuse and the relay first, I used to sell a lot of GM fuel pump relays. If your check shows that 12V is getting to the pump, then you need to find the access to the fuel pressure under the hood (it looks like a large tire valve and works the same way, make sure you are not looking at an air conditioning fitting--they are similar). When you find the valve in the fuel line, turn on the ignition, crank the engine a couple of turns, and then push in the little pintle in the center of the valve, just as you would if you were letting air out of a tire. Fuel should squirt out under pretty good pressure. If you don't get any, or only a dribble, then the pump is not getting fuel up to the injectors. Next thing to do would be check the filter under the car, go ahead and replace it while you're under there. If there's still no fuel pressure, and you can't hear the pump running in the tank (it is plenty loud enough to hear from under the truck; it sounds like a little electric motor running in the tank), then the tank has to come out. Although you may find something else amiss when you get the tank out (like a bad electrical connection or a kinked or crimped fuel line) I would recommend changing the pump anyway--they are cheap, easy to change, and one less thing to worry about.
