Auto Parts: 1991 Honda D12B1 engine power steering unit, tie rod ends, 1991 honda hatchback

Question
QUESTION: My brother in the Philippines has a 1991 Honda Hatchback that does not have a power steering unit installed in it.  Do you know of a steering unit part number or aftermarket steering unit kit that I can avail of in the US?  Thank you, sir.

ANSWER:      Are you saying that he has a car with manual steering?  In order to fit power steering he would have to scrounge up a power steering pump and brackets, the hoses to connect it, and the power rack with tie rod ends.  And, that's assuming that the rest of the suspension parts would be compatible (no reason to think that they wouldn't be, but American cars from the '70's and earlier frequently had different suspensions for power steering).  You can't just buy a "power steering kit" and add it to the car.  His best bet, if he has to have power steering for some reason, would be to buy a car with power steering and sell his.

QUESTION: Yes, his car has manual steering. I was wondering if there was a newer model car by Honda that I could scrounge out and install in his car.  Thank you.

Answer
Again, you are going to have to change all of the steering parts, plus find and install a pump, brackets, and hoses.  I'm sure you could do this if you got the parts from the same year and model, provided his car is a U.S. version of the car.  If it's a far-east model, not built to U.S. standards, then the parts will likely have to come from a wrecking yard in the Philippines, not from here.  Again, much smarter to just switch cars if there is a compelling reason to have power steering, which is considered an unnecessary luxury in most developing nations.
