Auto Parts: 4x4 4runner, cv axles, whip whip

Question
QUESTION: i have a 94 4runner 4x4. can i remove the front cv axles and temporarily drive the truck in 2 wheel drive?cant afford parts at this time.

ANSWER: Hi Bobby,

I guess you CAN, the question is would you want to.

Not only would you need to disconnect both axle shafts but the drive shaft would have to be remove also.

T-case damage is likely because of the lack of resistance from the rear drive to the front and will cause 'whip'. Whip causes the front drive to be out-of-synch with the rear and can later cause axle damage or complete and catastrophic T-case failure.

I understand it's close to the holiday season, but you have very little options. You can choose to pay a little now and have your ride operable or wait and pay allot later due to other major component failures arising from bad judgment.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: my cv axle is not bad,but where the boot connects to the back of the wheel hub is loose and makes a bad growling noise when i hit a bump driving. is that as bad as the noise sounds?is it something to be concerned about? its the noise thats driving me crazy

Answer
Hi Bobby,

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing. They are usually fairly inexpensive and pretty simple to install if you want to save a few bucks.
