Cadillac Repair: Starting problem 92 DeVille, two gm, gm dealer

Question
Once my '92 Sedan DeVille has been started and run, it frequently won't restart again until it has sat a while. In warm weather, it will start only intermittently, and often requires shifting to “neutral” and jimmying the key around. Everything indicates that the car has good power; chimes, interior lights, etc. all work but it doesn't even attempt to turn over; however it will turn over and start when jumped. Both the alternator and the battery have been replaced.

From what I've read in this column, the first thing that comes to mind is the ignition cylinder lock but I think the problem is more involved. On top of the “starting” problem I have issues with the security system and I think they both might be tied together. The car has been looked at and I was told that I have two GM security systems in place; the standard anti-theft and another GM dealer aftermarket; both apparently operated by the “two-button keychain clicker”. There is a toggle switch under the dash and a red LED next to the steering column that flashes continuously when the car is not running (could this be draining the battery, hence the need for periodic jumps?). Anyway, the security system somehow is arming itself (doors lock and alarm sounds if door opener is depressed) within about one minute of closing the door. Additionally, while driving, particularly once car has warmed up; the doors will lock and unlock three times.

Could the ignition lock cylinder be causing both problems, starting and security? If I replace the cylinder lock do I have to replace the keys too?

Answer
I would think that your problem is more likely to be with the NEUTRAL STARTER SAFETY SWITCH located on top of the engine near the firewall if this is a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE vehicle

OR under the dash on top of the steering column if this is a REAR WHEEL DRIVE vehicle.
