Question
I was told after they replaced my starter that my flywheel "has a bad spot in it" by a mechanic. The starter whines but wont engage. I can manually turn the engine and get it to a point it will start. I am assuming I need to replace the flywheel. Should they have done this when they replaced my starter?  I have a parts car that I can get the flywheel off of or should I buy a new one?  Is this something that is going to be terribly expensive/worth fixing?  I am a 51 year old female that loves to tinker with cars, but I know this is beyond me. However I dont want to open my hood and turn the engine every time! Help

Answer
Hi Erin,

Let me answer your question this way: In order to remove the flywheel, either the engine or the transmission would need to be removed first. If that is something you' enjoy doing, jack up the donor car and get to work. If you think that is a little outside your expertise, purchase a used one (from Knucklebusters) an have it installed. The cost will be minimal and you won't have to get your hands dirty.

I've learned over the years not to tell someone their car is not worth fixing/keeping. People tend to get attached to their vehicles and don't like changing to a new one. Sometime sentimental value eclipses Kelly-Blue-Book.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
