Auto Parts: 87 Toyota Celica, toyota celica, pep boys

Question
I have an '87 Toyota Celica in pristine condition except it has one problem.
When going around corners or trying to make any type of turn, the steering wheel is hard to turn.Everyone thinks it's the rack and pinion and a mechanic has said that the age of the car has made the steering mechanisms loose from age.I want to be sure that this is really the problem before repairing. I also understand that the previous owner accidently? put oil in the power steering reservoir at one time.
It is the GTS model with a 5 speed manual and a 2.o engine.
Also, there are no strange noises of any kind coming from the undercarriage, just the hard turning of the steering wheel. It also has a vibration in the steering wheel when going down the freeway.

Answer
Hi Gary,

JUST based on the fact that the prior owner used petroleum products in a hydraulic system tells me that you need to replace the pump and/or the rack or have the seals replaced in the units you have now. I would replace.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
