Auto Parts: ecu hyundai 2001 2.4lit 4cyc, ecu computer, backyard mechanic

Question
QUESTION: My 2001 Santa Fe recently died. After tuning it up replacing all sensors, timing belt, spark plung, etc. It still wouldn't start. They then said the ECU computer went bad. I ordered a new (used) ECU unit and the computer is reading that one as no good also. Could there be something inside that's shorting out the ECU unit or is it likely that I received a bad ECU unit. Please help, Walking abd frustrated about it.

ANSWER: Hi Yolanda,

I wish I could look at it for you as I'd be able to give you a better answer.

It is doubtful that the ECM you purchased was bad although the place you purchased it from SHOULD at least have a 30-day DOA warranty and will probably replace it at least one-time if you alert them that the first one was bad.

My guess on the 'no-start' is possibly a valvetrain problem. Your engine is restricted so if the timing belt was the original 'died' problem, then you probably have a lack of compression now. Have a mechanic do a compression test on the engine as well as a fuel pressure test and ignition timing check. With those results, even a backyard mechanic should be able to GUESS at the problem, but I' still take it to an ASE Technician to have it fixed right.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: Could it also be that the computer needs to be programmed/reset? This is what the auto parts company said is most likely the problemm

Answer
Hi Yolanda,

My guess would be no. My notes on that ECM don't specify that the unit will have to be reprogrammed to insure drivability or operation.

It is possible that if you didn't receive a numbers-matching computer that there will be issues with it starting/running.

There were four different ECM's placed into the Santa Fe in 2001, the ones w/2.4L, and they are as follows:
Ident: 3911038860
Ident: 3912138170
Ident: 3911038870
Ident: 3912138180

So if the module you received does not have the correct service number, it will not operate your vehicle.
