Auto Parts: Mazda cv and circlip fitment advice, mazda 323f 1998, cv axle

Question
I am having a problem fitting a CV Joint shaft to a Mazda 323F, 1998. The Cir-Clip appears to be too big even when fitted to shaft. I am assured by Mazda that is the correct cir-clip for the job, however when the circlip is fitted on to the shaftand is squashed up the ends meet but it is still proud of splines if i do get it to go into cv joint i think it will just pull out on road test. the cv fits the shaft ok both having 21 splines it is a  none abs system   Sg Petch mazda say circlip is compatible with all models from1994 to 1998 even though some shafts have 22 splines i have fitted lots to various cars over past30 years I was a mechanic up until 10 years ago am I missing something  or have I lost the plot 0n all CV,S I have done clip has clipped into groove ok  thanks Rob Hume

Answer
Hi Rob,

That clip is only there to keep the inner joint in contact with the seal surface to prevent trans leaks. Sometimes they are difficult to seat, but if the clip fits the shaft and when compressed, the ends meet, it is the correct part and it just requires some finesse to get it into the differential. You haven't lost your touch, cars have just gotten more complex overnight and tolerances are way tighter than on older model vehicles.

I've never seen a CV-axle fall out of a car. The clips and nuts holding the pieces in are for the owner an mechanic's piece-of-mind only because once squished between the trans and the hub, that shaft has no way of coming out.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
