Auto Parts: pontiac differential, diameter shaft, chevy c

Question
Wondering if u could help. I have a 66 chevy c-10 fleetside.I just purchased another chassis for it because the old one was bent. The new one i got has a 79 pontiac t/a differential on it and the front has chevy disc brakes.I purchased 4 wheels that fit only the chevy part without thinking i guess. We'll now here i am with 4 brand new wheels and only the 2 front fit. I guess my question is,is there any way i could just switch the axles out with chevy ones with the same bolt patterns as the front,or is there an easier way without getting rid of the rear end or wheels?Iwould really appreciate it if u could help me...thanks

Answer
Hi Doug,

Actually, you can. Five and six lug axles were manufactured with the same diameter shaft. You can, as long as you match the spline count in the differential, replace almost any GM axle shaft into the rear-end housing you currently have. If the differential in the new housing is different, change it out too.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
