Auto Parts: i dont want to get ripp off, chevy lumina, pep boys

Question
hi kuncklebuster, i recently purchased a 95 chevy lumina 3.1 from a private dealer. i was warned that i have to change the thermostat for the car before it overheat, my question is - how much do you think it should cost at a repair shop at most, i was approached by a guy on the street who claimed to be a machanic and was willing to do it for 100 bucks and told me that it'll cost me much more to have it done in a shop, what's your advice? thank you so very much, any respond is much much MUCH appreciated thanks!

Answer
Hi Kayn,

A thermostat on that engine is a pretty straight-forward R&R. You could probably do the repair yourself but if you do have to let someone else do it, get an estimate or a few of them and do some comparison shopping. If you're having a hard time trusting one mechanic, talk to several of them and compile the opinions.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
