Auto Parts: Starting problem with 2001 Eclipse, starter solenoid, pep boys

Question
I have a 2001 Eclipse, 4 cyl., standard transmission.  Problem: Every once in a while it will not start after reaching operating temp. and running a while.  It will not even crank.  When left for several hours it start fine with no hint of a problem.
I have changed the starter and after about three months it occurred again.  The battery has 12.75 volts at the post and 12.48 volts at the starter (main cable).  The smaller wire going to the starter solenoid has power when the key is in the "start position".  I didn't check the voltage to
the smaller wire.
Any idea what the problem is?

Answer
Hi Martin,

Seems like it could be a dirty contact inside the solenoid itself. Heat makes metal parts expand and once warmed, a small gap in a piece of conducting cable that may have been able to arc the gap cold, now is too big for an arc to form so therefor, no power will make it to the unit. If it does it again, use a SMALL hammer to tap the side of the starter solenoid while someone tries to crank it. If it turns over and starts while you're tapping on it, you'll need to replace the starter.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
