Auto Parts: Car vibration, hyundai accent, pep boys

Question
I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent. I recently started having problems with the car vibrating when I drive. It really doesn't matter if I'm going 25 or 65, I still feel the car shaking under my feet. I took it to the dealership, and they say they think it is the front struts. They didn't seem 100% certain, so I wanted to see if I could get your opinion. I don't want to waste $400 if that is not the real issue.

Answer
Hi Valerie,

Typically, anything you feel in the 'seat-of-your-pants' is caused by the rear end suspension and things you feel in the steering wheel are front suspension issues.

I can't say for sure if your struts are bad or not, I have rarely seen bad shocks/struts cause a vibration, especially at low-speeds. Tires are most likely your issue. I would rotate them front to back, examining them closely for wear indications, and then take it for a ride. See if the vibration changes or goes away or moves to the steering wheel.

It is very difficult to diagnose a drivability problem without driving the vehicle.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
