Auto Parts: What to do if Carburetor Floods?, pep boys, repair vehicles

Question
Hello,
I have an old '70's car with a 2 barrel Holley carb.  A couple of times during starting, I've accidentally flooded the carb.  I have to wait about 15-30 minutes generally and then I can start it after flooding.

I was wondering if there is a typical recommended procedure for what to do when you have accidentally flooded your carb?  Should I hold the gas pedal all the way down while cranking?  Or is just waiting it out the best approach?

Thank you very much!

Answer
Hi Brad,

If the engine is warm, hold the accelerator to the floor and crank for intervals of 20 seconds and rest, if it doesn't start, for 1 minute between tries to allow the starter to cool.

When cold you should just wait the ten or fifteen minutes so you do not damage the engine when it does fire at full throttle.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
