Auto Parts: Electronic? auto transmission problems, pep boys, hyundai excel

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have a 1999 hyundai excel R H steering automatic sedan,in which the transmission after 8 years, AGAIN, kicked back abruptly to ist gear. Now today After this happened, the second time,I can only start off to move the car forward ,if i accelerate slowly, and once the car is doing approx 20 kmph and over this speed ,the transmission seems normal.          The first time under warranty it was fixed, the salesman told me it was a chip.
If so, could you please tell me where to find on the car,or if not, what and where the problem is.

Kindest regards,
Graeme.

ANSWER: Hi Graeme,

The drivetrain controller of which you speak can only be reprogrammed at the dealership or replaced, and then programmed at the dealership for drivability.

The other thing that could be the problem is the governor could be stuck. The governor is the mechanical item inside the transmission that lets the PCM know how fast the trans is spinning and when to shift. If it gets some debris in it and sticks, it will stop the vehicle from shifting out of first until it reaches a preset speed which will allow the transmission to override the governor control and manually shift into the next highest gear.

I'd have to look at the vehicle to offer you more than that right now.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION:       Re hyundai excel trans probs.
Hi Fred,
Also when i turn ignition off and then restart engine i get all forward gears, but reverse gear has no torque.

Answer
Hi Graeme,

So when you reboot the trans computer, functionality is restored, even if only temporary. That should point to a bad controller but it sounds like the trans may be having it's own issues separate of the module.
